BrightMix
Posted April 23rd, 2008 at 7:46 pmSo a few months ago, I got an email from the head of the computer science department here at UNI. He periodically sends out emails containing swell little tidbits and things, including job opportunities. I saw a fabulous job offered by a company I’d never heard of, called BrightMix. I was excited; they paid well, were going to be using a language I was interested in learning, and were located somewhere outside of places I already knew; Omaha, Nebraska. Sometime after building my resume and emailing it to them with a synopsis of me (including: “..just a dash of crazy..”), they wanted to do a phone interview. The phone interview happened on a Wednesday at about 5pm. I was wandering around campus looking for a place to talk from, and ended up in the ITTC. The thirty minute interview covered many subjects, but I think it went very well. It must have, because then they wanted to do an actual interview. *shock*
One weekend, I drove to Omaha. It’s a long trip, taking around 4 hours straight from Cedar Falls to Omaha. Finally, I get there. Briefly, I consider stopping at the Horseshoe casino in Council Bluffs, but then I remember I’m trying to get a job. Yeah, I’m easily distracted. I get into the city a bit, and start looking for the office.
I drive right past it.
Twice.
Eventually I find it and walk in. Kevin sees me first. Being the resourceful individual I am, I found a picture on their website that showed who was who, so I could associate a face with a name. They offer me something to drink, and, eyeing the large bottle(s) of Jack they have, I briefly consider asking for a few shots to loosen up a bit. Remembering the last time I drank whisky, and also remembering that it’s a job interview, I decide against asking for Jack. During the two hour interview, I end up deciding the Jack is Kevin’s, although I could be wrong about that. Dusty does most of the talking, but Kevin has more things written down on my resume (What? They printed it off and wrote notes on it? Yeah, they did). Eventually the interview gets over.
I take off my tie.
Not long after that, I get a call from Dusty on my cell phone. “We’d like to offer you the job, if you’re still interested.”, he says. LOL, If I am still interested. No, I think I’d rather stay in Cedar Falls this summer. It’s not like everybody leaves and they do road construction all summer. Oh wait..
I called him back right away. “Hells yes.”
